    SHERQ Officer (Sezela)

    Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the position of SHERQ Officer (FTC) within the Agriculture Department. The position reports to the SHERQ Manager.

    Key Performance Area

    • Coach and guide management in the assessment, management, and continuous improvement of SHERQ performance.
    • Facilitate SHERQ investigations and coordinate the verification of closeout actions.
    • Facilitate the closeout of audit findings.
    • Create SHERQ awareness using various fit-for-purpose media (e.g., toolbox talks, noticeboards, electronic media).
    • Develop and communicate appropriate risk assessments and documentation to reduce injury, damage, and loss to personnel and the organization.
    • Report/discuss internal and external incidents (DI’s/fatalities) in management departmental production meetings.
    • Develop SHERQ capability in contractors and seasonals through facilitation of safety induction training/design material.
    • Manage SHERQ induction processes through effective planning, facilitation, and coordination.
    • Conduct inspections and internal audits to oversee and ensure adherence to legislative and IIRMS requirements.
    • Maintain the IIRMS and external assurance systems by creating and updating procedures, communicating changes to procedures, and auditing compliance.
    • Implement and drive the implementation of SHERQ programmes and plans specific to the area of responsibility (e.g., water usage plan).
    • Develop monitoring schedules to ensure compliance with statutory requirements for safety, environment, food safety, and occupational health.
    • Test and validate inputs into the ABF Annual HSE reporting process to reduce the likelihood of findings.
    • Compile SHERQ management reports.
    • Coordinate effective testing of emergency response protocols.
    • Ensure effective SHE committee meetings are conducted as scheduled through setting up the programme, attending meetings, and making necessary changes to IIIRMS as a result.
    • Create awareness of safety in communities who live and use the estate (e.g., schools, villages in the boundary) through developing and delivering pamphlets, talks, etc.
    • Promote and adhere to Illovo’s procedures, policies, and guidelines, including, without limitation, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law, and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).

    Minimum Specifications / Requirements

    • Diploma/Degree in Safety/Quality Management/Risk Management or related area; with a SAMTRAC qualification; ISO 9000/22 000 Lead Auditor qualification an advantage.
    • 2-3 years’ experience in an operational environment (Agriculture), working in a health and safety role.
    • Training in First Aid and Fire Prevention is an added advantage.
    • Knowledge of relevant SHERQ legislation and regulatory requirements.
    • Ability to plan, organise, and track activities for self and others; problem-solving and analytical skills; administrative ability and attention to detail; sound interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey information and influence others.
    • Report writing skills; ability to coach and facilitate learning; skills in MS Office.
