    Laboratory Technologist

    Description

    The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for maintaining Laboratory Systems and conducting Laboratory Procedures for Research Studies.  The incumbent will regularly perform work at a higher level of expertise in carrying out difficult, advanced or complex testing and is required to train other Technical/Professional Personnel and/or Function.

    Job Function

    • Liaise with stakeholders including sponsors, external suppliers, and programme managers.
    • Receive labelled and captured samples on LIMS.
    • Oversee and monitor equipment calibration and maintenance
    • Record keeping and filling in compliance with studies specific requirement and GCLP.
    • Oversee and implement safe working conditions and staff training in laboratory safety.
    • Oversee laboratory reagent ordering and stock control.
    • Implement study specific protocols and SOPs according to study specific laboratory manuals.
    • Compile laboratory reports and study specific reports as needed by the lab manager.
    • Troubleshooting, managing and/or preventing any lab-related problems or issues that arise and ensure corrective and preventative actions are taken as required.
    • Assist in developing and managing a laboratory quality management plan in order to ensure the laboratory is constantly able to provide a high-quality, cost-effective service and correct results.
    • This includes implementation of internal QC processes and participation in external quality assurance (EQA) activities
    • Conduct independent research under the supervision of Scientists.
    • Promote harmony, teamwork and sharing of information via team meetings.
    • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management.
    • Adding value in the Biomedical research laboratory introducing clinical pathology diagnosis.
    • Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as conferences, policy setting workshops etc.
    • In terms of scope and diversity, the Biomedical Research Laboratory is a complex and multidisciplinary research laboratory. It is therefore imperative that the incumbent be able to maintain continuous career development by studying to merge the diagnostic component with basic science research and introducing diverse assays in order to retain the viability of the laboratory.

    Requirements

    Education

    • National Diploma in Biomedical Technology (NQF level 6) , Advance Diploma in Biomedical Technology (NQF level 7) or Bachelor of Health Sciences in Medical Laboratory Science qualification at NQF level 8.
    • Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory  scientist

    Advantageous

    • Knowledge of principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and International Air Transport Association (IATA)
    • Knowledge of Laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or similar laboratory information system.
    • Enrolled with the latest programme or obtained the Advance Diploma in Biomedical Technology ( NQF level 7)
    • The duties also included but not limited to laboratory QA/QC and laboratory preparation for SANAS Audit

    Experience

    • Minimum of 4 years post qualification experience, with 2 years in clinical research trials in TB , HIV and SARS Cov 2

    Requirements

    • Working knowledge of lab accreditation and experience working with external auditors or monitors.
    • Attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, good administration skills including report writing, work independently within minimal supervision.
    • Proficient computer literacy skills including Microsoft office, PowerPoint, Excel and Word
    • SA Citizen or valid Work Permit to work in South Africa
    • Drivers Licence
    • Own car
    • Willing to work overtime and on weekends
